La Movida Madrileña Film Festival captured a countercultural movement that took place mainly in Madrid during the Spanish transition to democracy after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. During that time the movement coincided with economic growth in Spaincand a widespread desire for the development of a post-Francoist identity. The pursuit for new identity was bold, chaotic, full of struggle yet freeing and revolutionary. It revealing a place for new sexual identities, hedonistic cultural wave, an emergent LGBTQ+ community, illicit drug use, and the use of the cheli dialect. In movies, the leading representative of La Movida Madrileña was Almodóvar who comically reflected the messiness of the freedom of those years.
